Palazzo Contarini degli scrigni
- Dorsoduro 1057
- Venice
Situated a few steps from Saint Mark’s Square overlooking the Grand Canal, this Palace takes its name from the jewel boxes mounted on its walls.
Palazzo Contarini degli Scrigni is a renaissance building; it was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi to enlarge the palace nearby, Palazzo Contarini Corfù, and to increase the reception rooms. Scamozzi did not project a traditional central loggia, but a single window. The tower contains an observatory.
We can still admire precious frescoes and the original decoration inside the palace; nowadays the most part of Contarini picture collection is in the Accademia Gallery. Since the XIXth century the palace is property of the Rocca family.
