Maximilian Tower

  • Via De Le Motte, Isola di Sant'Erasmo
  • Venice

The Sant’Erasmo Island is the largest island in the Venetian lagoon, but it's only sparsely populated.

There is something new yet something old this year on this island. That's right, because the old, imposing Maximilian Tower is now no mere illustrious remnant of Austrian military architecture (1800) but a fully restored physical presence brightening the ancient area along the 'line of fire' that once protected the lagoon.

Named in honor of Archduke Maximilian of Austria who took refuge here during the turbulence in 1848, it has been completely renovated by the state concessionary Venice Water Authority on a project by architects Carlo Cappai and Maria Alessandra Segantini.

The works were carried out as part of a project for safeguarding against flood tides and for urban improvement. After years of the tower's progressive abandon and degrade, the verdant island of the market gardens and vineyards takes a new look at its most important monument .

Max. capacity: 200 people to be split in 12 rooms on 2 floors
